Test shots with my camera... it's empty @ Rain on a rainy Monday night!?! I haven't bought my new external flash yet.. so the internal flash that came with my Canon 400D is very focused and harsh.. sigh Another shot of the Rain restaurant, the entire place is lounge atmosphere and open concept.. even the kitchen.
A better shot of the splendid waterwall you'll see coming into the restaurant. Rain restaurant is well known for is experimentation with molecular gastronomy! Jimmy always remembered my birthday, me not so much... it's time to return the favor... and also showcase to Anjali the culinary delights that can be found within Toronto! Can you tell from the walls that Rain Restaurant used to be a women's prison? Owner The appetizer was the Rain Hotpot... the broth had essence of squab with shitake and black mushrooms.. very deep flavor. The right side is elk meat meant to be dipped into the hot pot prior to eating.
From left to right (If I remember correctly), a salmon and blue fin tuna tartar with crispy tuna skin on top and micro-veggies served in a tangerine sauce, in the middle are green snap peas wrapped in dikon radish with cauliflowerets in a yuzu sauce, last This course is Japanese style "Black Cod" Three Ways. First is a miso marinated black cod with miso sauce, grilled on top of a cedar plank. In the middle is a black cod and egg plant mixture smoked in bamboo. Finally, we had cod noodles served alongside e Next course is a pairing of prawn and Muscovy Duck. The a la carte menu usually pairs duck with lobster. Synchronized chopsticks could be an Olympic sport in Beijing? Every table had chopsticks so I guess Rain is giving the authentic Asian treatment even though the executive chef is Italian. They want you to know, they're not doing Asian Fusion, they're doin 5th course: Pairing of Korean style Kurobuta Pork  & Persimmons.  From right to left, a foie gras & hock terrine served in a melting cucumber sake bowl. The next dish is a kimchi tasting, Jimmy had the kimchee with spicy carrot froth, Anjali had Kimchee w 6th course: Dessert course. The right is a desert of some sort made with grapefruit .. light and refreshing topped with fresh grapefruit and pistachios. The left is a lemony desert with fennel crumble, creme fraiche and something.. man... too many to reme
The pastry chef was in a good mood and sent out an extra course for us. This is chocolate four ways. From right to left, a chocolate brownie (don't remember exactly) with a dark choco-chip, with citrus sake marinated grapes and wasabi-vanilla foam. A choc As per my tradition with my previous tasting menu pictorials, here's the bill. It's not bad considering each of us had 20 distinct items tonight.. $5 per item?.. not bad at all. We passed on the wine pairing. I never skim on food. It's a gastronomic exper

Description: Any"time" you look at it (Taiwanese time or Canadian timezone), I wanted Jimmy's first dinner as a 30 year old, or last dinner as a 20+ to be a special one. Plus, I haven't had a good tasting since August! Time to break free! Happy Birthday Jimmy!
