The message from Canadians is loud and clear, we don’t like any of the parties enough to give them the mandate to govern! Torontonians continue to support The Liberals while everywhere else, their former supporters split between The NDP and The Conservatives. The Conservatives also made headway in Quebec, at the expense of the Bloc and The Liberals. This can be seen as great news for the Federalist movement.
I welcome the Steven Harper era but am wondering what will happen when the “gag order” comes off The Conservatives. They have been held silent, letting their leader speak for the team. But a minority government will make things a little more difficult for the Tories.
My surprise of the election was Belinda Stronach’s re-election in the riding of Newmarket-Aurora. I did not think that voters would want to send Ms. Stronach to Parliament due to her previous defection for the Liberals. The story of the night shows how the polls were not very accurate again! The race were much closer than anticipated for The Liberals, and Newmarket-Aurora was one such critical electoral region.
All parties will have pressure to co-operate and make things work. There will be high voter apathy should there be another election call in the near future. This pressure works towards the advantage of The Conservatives. I will definitely be the first to be angry should the parties not be able to work together this time!
